We publish our own ADA compliance guide, spec every sign against the standard, order it to those specifications, and install it at the right height on the right side of the door. Almost certainly. The requirements cover virtually all facilities, both state and local government buildings under Title II and private businesses and public accommodations under Title III. Religious organizations are exempt.
Signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces — restrooms, room numbers and names, floor numbers, and exits — must be tactile. Tactile signs carry characters raised 1/32 inch, all upper case in a sans serif face, line spacing of 135 to 170 percent of the character height, and braille with domed dots, and they are installed 48 inches high on the latch side of the door. Directional and information signs do not have to be tactile, but they must meet the visual requirements.
Visual signs need a non-glare finish and contrast between the copy and its background, may be upper or lower case but not italic or script, and use character heights from 5/8 inch to 3 inches. Building directories, menus, seat and row designations, occupant names, building addresses, and company logos do not have to comply — so within the rules, color and material are still yours to choose.
